Euthyrox contains the active ingredient levothyroxine. This medicine is used for thyroid hormone 

replacement therapy in people whose thyroid gland is underactive. 

What is Euthyrox used for?

Euthyrox is used for thyroid hormone replacement therapy in people whose thyroid gland is underactive 

(hypothyroidism). Symptoms of hypothyroidism include:

Fatigue;

Lack of energy;

Increased sensitivity to cold;

Slow movements and thoughts;

Weight gain.

Levothyroxine replaces the thyroxine that would normally be produced naturally by the thyroid gland. 

This returns the levels to normal, which helps relieve or eliminate the above-mentioned symptoms. 

Euthyrox is sometimes also prescribed to manage overactivity of the thyroid gland. In such cases, 

Euthyrox is always used in combination with medicines that reduce thyroxine production in the thyroid gland.

How to use Euthyrox

Euthyrox tablets should be swallowed whole with plenty of liquid. For use in children, 

the tablet can be dissolved in water. Euthyrox tablets should preferably be taken on an empty stomach, 

at least 30 minutes before breakfast.

If you have forgotten to take a dose, you should take it as soon as you remember, 

unless it is almost time for your next scheduled dose.

Dosage

The doctor will recommend the right strength for you depending on your symptoms. 

In most cases, you start with a low dose. In the case of severe side effects or insufficient response, 

the doctor may decide to adjust your dose. Therefore, it may take a while for the benefits of this 

medicine to appear. The typical dose of Euthyrox in adults and children is:

one daily dose taken on an empty stomach once a day, half an hour before breakfast.

Do not exceed the prescribed dose and read the package leaflet before use.

Side effects

Euthyrox may cause side effects, although some people may not experience any. 

Reported side effects include:

Faster than normal heartbeat (tachycardia), awareness of your heartbeat (palpitations);

Chest pain (angina);

Headache;

Shaking, usually of the hands (tremor);

Restlessness.
